Understanding UK Childcare Costs and Free Hours
The 2024–2025 Free Hours Expansion
From April 2024, the government began a phased expansion of free childcare hours. From September 2024, working parents of children aged 9 months to 2 years are entitled to 15 free hours per week (term time). From September 2025, this rises to 30 hours per week for eligible working parents. All 3 and 4 year olds continue to receive 15 universal hours, rising to 30 for working parents.
Why the Free Hours Don’t Cover Everything
Free hours are typically funded at a rate lower than nurseries charge privately, and many nurseries charge top-up fees for meals, consumables and additional hours. Some charge higher rates per hour for hours outside the free allocation. Always check the specific charging structure of your nursery — the free hours reduce the bill but rarely eliminate it entirely.
Regional Cost Variation Is Enormous
Full-time nursery in central London can cost £2,500+ per month. The same provision in the North East or Wales might be £900–£1,200. The national average for full-time nursery is around £1,400 per month. This calculator uses regional averages, but your local nursery’s rate is the figure that matters — call and ask for a full fee schedule including any extras.
Tax-Free Childcare and Universal Credit
Tax-Free Childcare allows working parents to receive a government top-up of 20% on childcare costs (up to £2,000/year per child). Universal Credit claimants who are working may be able to claim back up to 85% of eligible childcare costs. Both can be used alongside free hours. You cannot use Tax-Free Childcare and the childcare voucher scheme simultaneously.
