Ways to reduce your childcare costs
💳 Tax-Free Childcare: For every £8 you pay in, the government adds £2 — up to £2,000 per child per year. Apply via your government gateway account at gov.uk/tax-free-childcare. Cannot be used at the same time as childcare vouchers.
📅 Spread your free hours: You can use your free hours across fewer days with longer sessions, or more days with shorter ones. Stretching free hours across 5 mornings rather than 3 full days can significantly reduce your bill, depending on your nursery’s structure.
🤝 Childminders and nurseries both count: Free hours can be used with Ofsted-registered childminders as well as nurseries. Childminders are sometimes cheaper per hour in suburban and rural areas, and offer more flexibility.
💰 Universal Credit childcare element: If you are on Universal Credit and working, you may be able to claim back up to 85% of eligible childcare costs. This can be combined with free hours. Check your entitlement at gov.uk.

Understanding UK Childcare Costs and Free Hours

01

The 2024–2025 Free Hours Expansion

From April 2024, the government began a phased expansion of free childcare hours. From September 2024, working parents of children aged 9 months to 2 years are entitled to 15 free hours per week (term time). From September 2025, this rises to 30 hours per week for eligible working parents. All 3 and 4 year olds continue to receive 15 universal hours, rising to 30 for working parents.

02

Why the Free Hours Don’t Cover Everything

Free hours are typically funded at a rate lower than nurseries charge privately, and many nurseries charge top-up fees for meals, consumables and additional hours. Some charge higher rates per hour for hours outside the free allocation. Always check the specific charging structure of your nursery — the free hours reduce the bill but rarely eliminate it entirely.

03

Regional Cost Variation Is Enormous

Full-time nursery in central London can cost £2,500+ per month. The same provision in the North East or Wales might be £900–£1,200. The national average for full-time nursery is around £1,400 per month. This calculator uses regional averages, but your local nursery’s rate is the figure that matters — call and ask for a full fee schedule including any extras.

04

Tax-Free Childcare and Universal Credit

Tax-Free Childcare allows working parents to receive a government top-up of 20% on childcare costs (up to £2,000/year per child). Universal Credit claimants who are working may be able to claim back up to 85% of eligible childcare costs. Both can be used alongside free hours. You cannot use Tax-Free Childcare and the childcare voucher scheme simultaneously.

Frequently Asked Questions

When do the 30 free hours start for my child?+
From September 2025, 30 hours of free childcare per week (term time) will be available to eligible working parents of children aged 9 months to school age. Eligibility begins the term after your child turns the qualifying age. For 3 and 4 year olds: 15 universal hours from the term after their third birthday; 30 hours if both parents are working. You apply via the government’s childcare service at childcare.gov.uk. Codes must be renewed every 3 months.
Can I use free hours at a childminder instead of a nursery?+
Yes — free hours can be used with any Ofsted-registered childcare provider including nurseries, pre-schools, childminders and some nannies who are registered with a childcare agency. The provider must be registered to accept the funding. Childminders can sometimes offer more flexible hours and may be cheaper per hour than nurseries, particularly outside major cities.
What are the additional charges nurseries can apply?+
While nurseries cannot charge top-up fees on the funded hours themselves, they can charge separately for meals, nappies, sun cream, trips, and additional services. Some nurseries also charge a higher hourly rate for private hours beyond the free allocation. Always ask for a complete fee schedule including all additional charges before enrolling — the headline hourly rate rarely tells the full story.
How does Tax-Free Childcare work alongside free hours?+
Tax-Free Childcare can be used on top of free hours to cover the remaining costs. You open an online account, pay money in, the government adds 20% (up to £2,000 per year per child), and you use the total to pay your nursery. It applies to the costs you actually pay — not the free hours allocation. You cannot use Tax-Free Childcare and employer childcare vouchers at the same time. Apply at childcare.gov.uk.
Is nursery worth it financially for one parent’s salary?+
This is one of the most common questions parents ask and the answer is highly individual. For many families, full-time nursery costs eat a significant proportion of one parent’s take-home pay — sometimes more than the salary itself after tax and NI. However, the financial calculation must also account for: career continuity and future earning potential, pension contributions, the non-financial value of adult time, and the fact that costs reduce significantly once free hours kick in.
