Pumping should not be painful. The Gen 2+ uses continuous suction and can remove additional milk, so use comfortable suction and seek feeding support if expressing is painful or milk supply is a concern.

01 · Quick verdict

Who this makes sense for

02 · Current recommendation

The Haakaa worth covering now is the Gen 2+

The current Gen 2+ keeps the one-piece silicone idea but adds two genuinely useful changes: a softer ComfortCARE flange and the SpillGUARD insert.

The Haakaa Gen 2+ is best understood as a continuous-suction manual silicone pump. Squeeze the body to create suction, centre the nipple in the flange and let the pump draw milk. It can also sit on the opposite breast during a feed to collect milk released during let-down.

That makes it unusually simple and portable, but it is not the same mechanism as an electric pump cycling between stimulation and expression patterns. Buy it for simplicity and occasional milk removal, not because it is a cheaper substitute for every electric-pump job.

What changes with Gen 2+

The useful details are the flange, spill protection and the fact that nothing needs charging.

04 · How it works

Simple does not mean completely passive

The pump creates suction itself; milk flow still varies by person, time of day and how the pump is fitted.

Haakaa instructs users to squeeze the base to apply suction. Once milk begins to flow, the pump can remain attached without being held. Folding back the flange before attachment can create stronger suction, but more suction is not automatically better if it is uncomfortable.

During breastfeeding, attaching it to the opposite breast can capture let-down while also applying suction. That is different from a low-suction shell that merely catches leakage inside a bra.

Our take

Think of it as a small manual pump, not just a milk catcher. That distinction matters because removing more milk than would otherwise leak can influence how full the breast becomes and, for some people, milk production.

05 · The upgrade

ComfortCARE and SpillGUARD are the reasons to choose Gen 2+

The basic silicone-pump idea is familiar; these are the parts that make the newer version materially more usable.

The ComfortCARE flange uses ultra-soft silicone with four moulded interior rings intended to reduce friction and tugging while preserving the flange shape. The SpillGUARD sits inside the neck during pumping and is designed to let milk enter while reducing the chance that a knock sends collected milk back out.

The stopper is spill-resistant rather than magic. The suction base is still useful once the pump is placed on a smooth surface, and collected milk should still be transferred promptly into a suitable clean container.

06 · Where it fits

Four jobs it does particularly well

The strongest case is convenience rather than maximum pumping capability.

Why it stands out
✓No motor, battery, cables or tubing
✓100ml and 150ml sizes
✓Softer ComfortCARE flange
✓SpillGUARD plus suction base reduce everyday spill risk
Good to know
!Output varies and is not predictable at every feed
!Continuous suction is different from powered cyclic pumping
!Extra milk removal can affect supply
!Wash and sterilise according to current instructions after use
07 · What to compare

Haakaa Gen 2+ vs milk collector vs electric pump

Three products can look similar in shopping results while doing different jobs.

08 · Modern Parenting verdict

A clever little pump when you give it the right job.

The Gen 2+ improves the Haakaa formula in the places that matter: a gentler flange and better spill protection, while keeping the silent, battery-free simplicity that makes the product useful.

Its value drops quickly if you expect it to behave like a regular double electric pump. For let-down collection, occasional expressing and backup use, however, it remains a very easy product to justify.

09 · Common questions

Frequently asked questions

It is a manual silicone breast pump that uses continuous suction. It can collect let-down during a feed, but it can also draw out additional milk.

The current Gen 2+ is sold in 100ml and 150ml sizes. Choose around the capacity and portability you want rather than breast size.

No. It is designed to reduce spills from bumps and knocks. Treat it as extra protection, not a sealed storage system.

Not for every routine. Regular replacement of feeds, exclusive pumping or a supply-focused plan usually calls for a pump chosen around repeated controlled expression.

Release suction and stop. Re-check placement and suction; persistent pain, heat, inflammation or supply concerns are reasons to seek feeding or healthcare support.

Haakaa says to wash and sterilise before first use and after each use, following the current product instructions.
