Infant car-seat review

Joie i-Level Pro Review

A deep-reclining infant carrier with more installation freedom than most rivals.

The i-Level Pro combines a 157° near-flat recline with vehicle-belt installation, two compatible Joie bases and broad pushchair compatibility. Its strength is not one isolated feature, but the way those options let the same carrier work across different cars and travel routines.

Car-seat fit remains vehicle-specific. The i-Level Pro can be installed with a vehicle 3-point belt or a compatible Joie base. Check the manual and vehicle-fit guidance for every car you plan to use, and never place a rear-facing infant carrier in front of an active frontal airbag.

01 · The short answer

The i-Level Pro gives you a deep recline without making a base compulsory.

The Joie i-Level Pro covers the 40–87cm infant stage with a 157° near-flat recline, a 4.68kg shell and the choice of vehicle-belt installation or one of two Joie bases. That combination gives it more flexibility than infant carriers that only make sense once a proprietary base is installed.

What it does best It combines a deep recline with belt installation, so the carrier can move between a main car, a second car or occasional taxi use without depending on a second base.
Main compromise The i-Base Encore adds a 90° loading turn, but the Joie system does not bring the seat out towards you in the way Maxi-Cosi’s FamilyFix 360 Pro does.
02 · At a glance

The i-Level Pro keeps the infant-carrier format while adding more adjustment and installation choice

Its 40–87cm range is conventional for a first-stage carrier; the more distinctive part is how much flexibility Joie builds around that core.

Child range40–87cm
Maximum child weight13kg
Seat weight4.68kg
Deep recline157°

The i-Level Pro is a rear-facing infant carrier intended for birth to around 15 months, with use ending at 87cm or 13kg. At 4.68kg, it remains light enough to work as a removable carrier rather than behaving like a fixed rotating seat that happens to detach from a base.

That portability is backed by three installation routes. The seat can be secured with the vehicle’s 3-point belt, clipped onto i-Base Encore or used with i-Base LX 2. The Encore route adds a 90° turn towards the car door, while belt installation keeps the carrier usable when the base is in another car.

Fit adjustment is more conventional, but still well handled. The Grow Together headrest and harness move together without rethreading, while the removable infant insert supports the earliest stage and can be taken out as space becomes tighter. The 40–87cm range is typical for an infant carrier, but the combination of easy harness adjustment and multiple installation routes makes the seat easier to keep in regular use across different cars and growth stages.

The i-Level Pro improves the infant-carrier stage rather than stretching itThe i-Level Pro does not extend the infant-carrier stage beyond its natural limits. It concentrates instead on making that stage more flexible, with a deep recline, multiple installation routes and enough adjustment to keep the fit changing with the child.
03 · Recline

The 157° position changes how the carrier works beyond the car

The recline is the feature that gives the i-Level Pro its clearest point of difference, particularly when the carrier is moved between car and pushchair.

The shell reclines to 157°, opening the child’s posture more than a conventional upright infant carrier. Joie permits that position both in the vehicle and on a compatible pushchair, so the deeper angle remains available when the carrier moves out of the car rather than disappearing as soon as it is attached to a chassis.

That makes short transfers more comfortable without turning the carrier into a carrycot substitute. A baby who has fallen asleep in the car can remain in the same seat for the move into a shop or a brief errand, while the recline reduces the sense of being held in the carrier’s most upright angle throughout.

The distinction between near-flat and flat still matters. At 157°, the seat is not horizontal, and the harness and shell continue to define the child’s position. For longer walks, routine naps or extended time out of the car, a flat carrycot remains the stronger newborn setup because it is designed around lying space rather than restraint.

The recline works best as an extension of what the infant carrier can do, rather than a substitute for a carrycot or dedicated sleep space. It gives a young baby a more open position in the car and on the pushchair, while keeping the i-Level Pro firmly within its role as a travel seat.

04 · Installation

Belt installation gives the i-Level Pro flexibility that a base-only seat cannot match

A base is the easiest route for daily use, but the ability to leave it behind materially changes how practical the carrier is across more than one car.

The i-Level Pro can be secured directly with a vehicle’s 3-point belt, so buying a base is optional rather than a condition of using the seat. That matters in a second car, a grandparent’s car or a taxi because the carrier does not lose its function when the fixed hardware stays at home.

For the main family car, i-Base Encore is the more convenient setup. ISOFIX connectors and a support leg keep the base installed, while the carrier turns 90° towards the open door for loading. Encore also supports selected later Joie seats, so the base can remain part of the setup after the i-Level Pro is outgrown.

i-Base LX 2 is the simpler alternative. It gives the i-Level Pro an ISOFIX base route without the 90° loading turn or the same emphasis on a longer-term rotating-seat system. That makes the choice fairly clear: Encore adds convenience and more continuity into the next stage, while LX 2 keeps the setup more straightforward.

The i-Level Pro works particularly well because neither installation route compromises the core seat. Belt installation keeps the carrier usable across different cars, while Encore and LX 2 add convenience for regular use rather than making the seat dependent on a proprietary base.

What works well
✓Vehicle-belt installation is fully supported
✓i-Base Encore adds a 90° loading turn
✓i-Base LX 2 provides a simpler compatible base route
✓Encore can continue with selected later Joie seats
Worth knowing
!Both bases are separate purchases
!There is no slide-out loading mechanism
!Vehicle fit still needs checking for every installation route
!A next-stage seat is still required after the infant-carrier limit
05 · Fit and adjustment

The headrest, harness and insert help the seat adapt as the baby grows

Infant-carrier fit changes quickly, so adjustment matters more than the fact that the shell can technically accommodate a broad height range.

The Grow Together headrest and harness adjust at the same time, which removes the need to unthread and rebuild the harness as the child grows. That makes regular fit checks easier to act on, because increasing the headrest height also moves the harness into the corresponding position.

For smaller babies, the full-body infant insert adds support inside the shell. Joie recommends keeping it in place while the child is under 60cm or until the fit becomes cramped around the shoulders, after which it can be removed to open more space inside the carrier.

Fit changes considerably over the course of the first year. A newborn needs more internal support and a compact seating position; several months later, the same carrier has to accommodate greater height and shoulder width without becoming restrictive. By combining the removable insert with linked headrest and harness adjustment, the i-Level Pro can change with that growth rather than relying on one fixed internal shape across the full 40–87cm range.

Fit adjustment stays simple as the child growsThe fit system is straightforward rather than elaborate, which suits an infant carrier. The combined headrest and harness adjustment keeps growth changes quick, while the removable insert prevents the smallest-baby support from occupying space once it is no longer needed.
06 · Out of the car

The deep recline makes the travel-system setup more practical

Pushchair compatibility is common in this category; the i-Level Pro stands out because its 157° recline remains available once the seat is on the chassis.

The i-Level Pro makes better use of travel-system compatibility than a conventional click-on infant carrier because the 157° recline remains available on the pushchair. It works with a broad range of Joie pushchairs and can also connect to other brands through compatible Maxi-Cosi-style adapters, so the car seat is not tied to one pushchair family.

That extra recline changes the quality of the transfer rather than simply making it possible. A conventional infant carrier can still hold the child in a relatively upright travelling posture once attached to a pushchair. The i-Level Pro opens that angle further, making short periods on the chassis more comfortable when the baby remains in the carrier.

Compatibility still needs checking at model level. Adapter formats may be shared across brands, but individual pushchair generations, carrier shells and mounting points can still differ. The exact pushchair and adapter combination therefore matters more than the connector style alone.

Joie also certifies the i-Level Pro for aircraft use. That extends its role beyond everyday car and pushchair journeys, although airline approval policies still need checking before travel. Taken together, the seat covers a broader range of journeys without trying to replace the carrycot or main pram setup.

07 · Safety evidence

R129 approval is backed by the same ADAC score with belt or Encore base installation

The ADAC result covers both belt installation and use with i-Base Encore, so the seat has been independently assessed in each of its main everyday configurations.

The i-Level Pro meets ECE R129/03, including the side-impact requirements built into that standard. Joie also gives the carrier an ADAC score of 2.3, rated “Good”, both with vehicle-belt installation and when paired with i-Base Encore. That gives the two main installation routes the same independent test result, rather than leaving the belt option as a secondary configuration with less evidence behind it.

That strengthens the case for using the seat across more than one car. The carrier can stay on its base for everyday use, then move into a second vehicle using the belt without changing to an installation route that has performed differently in the same test programme. For a seat whose flexibility is one of its main selling points, that consistency is more meaningful than simply having several approved ways to fit it.

No test result removes the need for correct installation. Belt routing, base support-leg position, seat angle and available cabin space still determine whether the carrier works well in a specific vehicle. The i-Level Pro gives you several approved routes, but each one still has to work properly in the car you actually use.

08 · Closest alternative

The Pebble 360 Pro² simplifies loading; the i-Level Pro gives you more installation flexibility

Both cover the same 40–87cm / 13kg infant stage, but their core strengths solve different everyday problems.

Joie i-Level Pro More flexible away from the main car The 157° recline works in the car and on a pushchair, while vehicle-belt installation means the carrier remains fully usable without its base.
Maxi-Cosi Pebble 360 Pro² Easier access when paired with FamilyFix 360 Pro Maxi-Cosi adds a full lie-flat position and SlideTech, which brings the carrier around 17cm towards the door as well as rotating it.

The Maxi-Cosi route is stronger when the daily problem is physically reaching into the car. FamilyFix 360 Pro rotates and slides the Pebble 360 Pro² towards the door, reducing how far the adult has to lean into the cabin. That is a more ambitious loading system than the 90° turn provided by i-Base Encore.

Joie’s advantage appears when the base is not available. The i-Level Pro can move into another vehicle and retain a manufacturer-approved belt installation without additional hardware. That makes the carrier easier to share between cars and less dependent on duplicating expensive bases.

That leaves a fairly clear distinction between the two. The Pebble 360 Pro² is stronger when easier loading in one main car is the priority, while the i-Level Pro gives you more freedom to move the carrier between vehicles without duplicating base hardware.

09 · Modern Parenting verdict

The i-Level Pro gets the balance between comfort and flexibility right

The 157° recline gives the carrier a clear advantage over a more upright infant seat during short transfers and travel-system use, while the 40–87cm range, combined headrest-and-harness adjustment and removable insert keep the fit moving through the first stage without unnecessary complexity.

Its strongest design decision is the choice not to make a base mandatory. i-Base Encore adds a convenient 90° loading turn and a route into selected later Joie seats, but the vehicle-belt path means the carrier still works fully when that hardware stays in another car.

The i-Level Pro still remains a first-stage carrier, and it is heavier than some simpler alternatives. It also stops short of the more elaborate loading systems now available elsewhere in the category. Those compromises are easier to accept because the core seat is not built around one fixed base: the recline, fit adjustment and belt installation all remain available independently of the more expensive hardware.

10 · Common questions

Frequently asked questions

The key questions around recline, installation, base choice and lifespan.

Yes. It can be installed with a vehicle 3-point seat belt. i-Base Encore and i-Base LX 2 are optional compatible bases.

The seat reclines to 157°, which Joie describes as near-flat rather than fully horizontal. It remains an infant car seat and restraint, not a carrycot or routine sleep space.

When paired with i-Base Encore, the carrier turns 90° towards the car door for loading. The carrier does not provide that rotation when installed directly with the vehicle belt.

It is approved for rear-facing use from 40 to 87cm and up to 13kg, approximately birth to around 15 months. Stop using it when the child reaches the applicable limit or no longer fits according to the instructions.

The compatible Joie bases are i-Base Encore and i-Base LX 2. Encore adds the 90° loading turn and is part of Joie’s wider spinning-seat system.

Yes. Joie gives an ADAC score of 2.3, rated “Good”, both with vehicle-belt installation and when the carrier is used with i-Base Encore.

Yes. It works with a range of Joie pushchairs and with selected other brands using compatible Maxi-Cosi-style adapters. Check the exact pushchair and adapter combination before buying.
