What best describes your pumping situation?
Do I need to buy a breast pump before my baby arrives?
Not necessarily. Many parents don’t know whether they’ll need to pump or how much until after birth. Waiting until you’ve established feeding — usually 4–6 weeks — means you can make a more informed choice. If you’re planning to exclusively pump from day one, having a pump ready in advance makes sense.
Does a more expensive pump mean more milk?
Not directly. Milk output depends primarily on how frequently and effectively milk is removed — a good double electric at £170 can outperform a wearable at £380 in raw efficiency. The value of premium pumps is in convenience and discretion, not necessarily yield.
Can I use a second-hand breast pump?
It depends on the pump type. Open-system pumps (where milk can enter the tubing and motor) should not be shared as they cannot be adequately sterilised. Closed-system pumps (Medela Swing, Spectra) are generally considered safe to use second-hand with new accessories, though manufacturers don’t recommend it. Check the specific model before purchasing second-hand.
Are wearable pumps as effective as traditional ones?
For most parents, yes — though it varies. The Elvie Stride in particular performs well for regular use. Some parents find they yield slightly less from wearable pumps than from traditional double electrics, possibly due to fit or suction differences. The convenience trade-off is usually worth it for working parents.
What flange size do I need?
Flange size is the diameter of the funnel that fits over your nipple — the wrong size is the most common cause of poor pump output and discomfort. Most pumps come with 24mm and 28mm flanges, but many people need smaller (17mm, 19mm, 21mm). A lactation consultant can help with sizing, or use the manufacturer’s measuring guides.
