Safer sleep: The Lullaby Trust recommends that babies sleep in their own clear, flat, firm, separate sleep space in the same room as a parent or carer for at least the first six months. It also states that bedside cribs sold since 2020 should meet BS EN 1130:2019. Keep the mattress flat for routine sleep, even where a manufacturer provides an incline setting.

01 · The shortlist

Bed compatibility comes first. The extras only matter once the crib fits correctly.

A bedside crib keeps the baby on a separate mattress immediately beside the adult bed. That makes night feeds and settling easier without turning the adult mattress into the baby’s sleep surface. For the arrangement to work properly, however, the crib needs to match the height and structure of the bed and be installed exactly as its manufacturer specifies.

The biggest differences between current cribs are therefore more practical than they first appear. Some secure to the bed with straps, while Mamas & Papas designs the Lua to sit beside it without them. Some move as one complete crib, while Lua and SnuzPod5 let you lift the bassinet away from the stand. Chicco’s Next2Me Forever goes further by extending the product into later cot and floor-bed stages.

Several manufacturers also provide inclined or so-called anti-reflux settings. Those do not form part of our ranking. Independent safer-sleep guidance says babies should sleep on a firm, flat surface and specifically advises against tilting or propping the mattress for reflux, so the comparisons below treat flat sleep as the default.

What we checkedCurrent manufacturer specifications, manuals and major UK retailer listings were checked for each exact product, including bedside attachment, height adjustment, mattress information, included parts and stop-use instructions. Safer-sleep guidance was checked separately against The Lullaby Trust. Recommendations are editorial judgements based on documented specifications and the practical differences between the designs.

Mamas & Papas Lua

A strong all-round choice if you want bedside access without securing straps and a bassinet that can lift away from its stand.

StageBirth to approx. 6 months
Bed attachmentNo straps required by design
Mattress84 × 48 × 3.5cm
Height settings5

Lua stands apart from most bedside cribs because Mamas & Papas specifies that it does not need to be strapped to the adult bed. Five height positions allow the stand to be adjusted beside the mattress, while the drop-down access side makes it easier to reach the baby from bed and can be set to return to its raised position after use.

The second part of the design is the removable bassinet. The sleep section lifts away from the stand, allowing the same familiar space to be moved into another room for daytime naps. The supplied mattress measures 84 × 48 × 3.5cm, and the frame also includes storage below and folds for transport or storage.

The strap-free design changes the bedside setup

Most bedside cribs in this guide rely on straps running around or beneath the adult mattress. Lua does not. That can make it easier to position beside beds where routing straps would otherwise be awkward, and it also means the crib can be moved away from the bed without first undoing an attachment system.

It still needs to be positioned correctly. The absence of straps does not remove the need to check mattress height, frame shape and the instructions for bedside use. You still need to check that the crib will sit at the correct height and position beside your bed before buying.

The removable bassinet gives it a second role during the day

Being able to lift the bassinet from the stand means you do not have to move the entire frame whenever you want the baby sleeping nearby in another room. That is particularly attractive during the early months when daytime naps may happen downstairs while the main stand remains beside the bed.

The bassinet does not extend the product’s developmental lifespan; it simply makes the newborn stage more flexible. Mamas & Papas tells parents to stop using Lua once the child can sit, kneel or pull themselves up, so a cot still needs to be ready for the next stage.

The access side is designed to return to its raised position

Lua’s full-width side can be lowered to reach the baby from the adult bed. The auto-return function then raises it again, which distinguishes the mechanism from a simple fabric panel that is manually zipped up and down each time.

It is worth becoming familiar with that mechanism before the crib is needed overnight. Assemble the final bedside setup, practise operating the side and check that the stand remains correctly positioned against your actual bed rather than relying on how the crib appeared in a showroom or product photograph.

✓
Our take

Lua makes the strongest case when straightforward bedside positioning and a removable bassinet matter more than getting the lowest price. Its strap-free design is a meaningful advantage, but only if its height and stand geometry suit the bed you already own.

03 · Best lift-off system

Snuz SnuzPod5

A furniture-style bedside crib with particularly clear bed-fit guidance, a lift-off bassinet, rocking stand and wheels.

Mattress80 × 44 × 3cm
Child limit9kg + developmental limit
Adult mattressUp to 70.5cm high
Crib standardBS EN 1130:2019

SnuzPod5 combines the look of a small piece of nursery furniture with several ways to use the same sleep space. It can sit beside the adult bed, operate as a standalone crib, rock on its wooden stand and release the bassinet from that stand for naps elsewhere in the home. Wheels are also supplied for easier repositioning.

Snuz publishes more exact compatibility information than many manufacturers. The mattress measures 80 × 44 × 3cm, the crib is certified to BS EN 1130:2019 and the supplied mattress to BS EN 16890:2017+A1:2021. The maximum child weight is 9kg, with use ending earlier if the child can sit, kneel or pull themselves up.

Check the adult mattress height before ordering

Snuz specifies that the top of the adult mattress should sit level with the top of the SnuzPod5’s zip-down wall when it is used in bedside mode. The maximum permitted adult mattress height is 70.5cm from the floor, and Snuz states that the crib is designed to work with framed, divan and ottoman bed bases.

That published limit makes the pre-buy check relatively simple: measure from the floor to the top of the adult mattress in its normal setup, including any topper that stays on the bed. A crib that exceeds its permitted alignment range is not made suitable by choosing the closest height setting.

The bassinet lifts away from the wooden stand

The lift-off arrangement allows the baby’s sleep space to move without carrying the whole 12kg-plus crib through the house. The stand can remain assembled in the bedroom while the bassinet is placed in another appropriate location for daytime sleep.

That is a different kind of portability from a crib that folds for travel. SnuzPod5 is still a substantial furniture-style product, so its advantage is moving the bassinet around the home rather than regularly packing the complete crib into a car. Iora Pro is the stronger choice if folding the entire unit is the priority.

Wheels and rocking are built into the stand

The stand can be configured for rocking, while the supplied wheels make smaller movements around the bedroom easier. Those features give the SnuzPod5 more flexibility than a completely fixed wooden crib without changing the basic sleep space above it.

They also explain some of the extra size and weight compared with simpler fabric-frame alternatives. If you expect the crib to stay in one position for most of the first six months, those additions may matter less than the lower price or quicker fold offered elsewhere.

✓
Best fit

SnuzPod5 suits a bedroom where you want a more substantial crib but still want the baby’s bassinet to move elsewhere during the day. Its clearly documented mattress, weight and bed-height limits also make compatibility easier to check before buying.

04 · Best for folding & moving

Maxi-Cosi Iora Pro

A mesh-sided bedside crib that folds quickly, rolls on four wheels and switches between bedside and standalone use without a separate bassinet.

Stage0–6 months / 0–9kg
Height settings5
Wheels4
Mattress3cm high-density foam

Iora Pro is built around moving and folding the complete crib rather than lifting a bassinet away from a permanent stand. It has four wheels, five height positions and a side panel that converts the unit between bedside and standalone use. Maxi-Cosi also supplies securing straps for the adult bed, cotton sheets and a travel bag.

The sleep space is surrounded by mesh for visibility from different angles, while the supplied mattress uses 3cm high-density foam. Maxi-Cosi lists the crib for newborns to approximately six months or 9kg, with the transition happening sooner once the baby can roll, sit or push up independently.

The complete crib folds rather than separating into two pieces

Maxi-Cosi describes Iora Pro as folding flat in seconds, and the product arrives assembled so it can be unfolded without building a separate wooden frame. That makes it easier to put away temporarily or take elsewhere than a more furniture-like bedside crib.

The distinction matters if the crib will regularly move between bedrooms, stay with grandparents or travel in the car. SnuzPod5 and Lua offer removable bassinets for movement within the home, while Iora Pro is better suited to situations where the whole crib needs to change location.

Four wheels make room-to-room movement simpler

The crib rolls on four wheels rather than relying on lifting or dragging the frame. That makes it easier to pull away from the adult bed to change sheets, reposition it during the day or move it into another room when used in standalone mode.

At 12.8kg, it is not especially light, so the wheels are more important than the manufacturer’s references to portability might suggest. It is best thought of as a crib designed to move smoothly on the floor and fold when required rather than something you will casually carry around the house.

Keep the mattress flat for routine sleep

Maxi-Cosi includes an inclined setting and markets it for reflux. That feature should be separated from current independent safer-sleep advice: The Lullaby Trust says babies should sleep flat on their backs and specifically advises parents not to incline, tilt or prop the mattress for reflux.

The stronger reasons to choose Iora Pro are therefore its folding design, wheels, mesh sides, five height settings and straightforward switch between bedside and standalone modes. The incline does not need to form part of the buying decision.

✓
Our take

Iora Pro is the better choice when the whole crib needs to move or fold regularly. It lacks the lift-off bassinet of Lua and SnuzPod5, but its four-wheel frame and quick fold make moving the complete sleep space considerably simpler.

05 · Best for longer use

Chicco Next2Me Forever

A much larger 3-in-1 option for families who want bedside use to continue beyond the usual six-month stage and the same frame to become a cot afterwards.

Overall useBirth to 4 years / 22kg
Bed heights53.5–72cm
Height settings11
ModesBedside / cot / floor bed

Next2Me Forever is considerably larger than the other products here because it is designed to continue after a conventional bedside crib would have been put away. Chicco specifies an overall use period from birth to four years / 22kg, with the product moving between bedside mode, a traditional enclosed cot and a floor-bed configuration for toddlers.

Chicco also states that bedside use can continue beyond the standard six-month period. A patented barrier system is designed so the side cannot remain lowered when the cot is not correctly attached to the adult bed, while 11 height positions and foldable feet give it a broad adjustment range beside different bed structures.

The longer lifespan changes the value calculation

Most bedside cribs are bought with the expectation that they will be replaced after roughly the first six months. Next2Me Forever is different because the frame is large enough to continue as the child’s main cot after the bedside arrangement is no longer needed.

The floor-bed stage extends that further, with Chicco specifying conversion from around 18 months when appropriate. That does not mean every family needs a bedside crib that lasts four years, but it gives the higher initial price a very different context from paying around £200 for a product intended only for infancy.

Eleven height positions broaden the range of beds it can fit

Chicco publishes compatibility with adult beds between 53.5 and 72cm high and provides 11 height positions. Foldable feet are intended to help the frame sit alongside beds with structures or storage beneath them that might obstruct the legs of a more conventional bedside crib.

That still does not remove the need to measure carefully. The cot is much larger than the others here, so check both the mattress height and the available floor area beside the bed. A crib can be height-compatible while still being impractical in a narrow bedroom.

The larger footprint is the main compromise

Next2Me Forever measures roughly 121 × 73.8cm and weighs about 20.7kg. Four lockable swivel wheels make repositioning possible, but this is not a compact bedside crib that you will regularly fold into a travel bag or carry between floors.

That size is inseparable from its longer lifespan. Families with the floor space may appreciate avoiding a separate cot purchase later; those working with a narrow gap beside the bed are more likely to prefer one of the conventional first-six-month options.

✓
Best fit

Next2Me Forever makes most sense when you have room for a full cot beside the bed and want that purchase to continue well beyond the newborn stage. It is harder to justify if compact dimensions and easy transport matter more than long-term conversion.

What works
✓Designed to continue beyond six months
✓Converts to a traditional cot and later floor bed

✓11 height settings
✓Barrier system linked to correct bedside attachment
Good to know
!Much larger than a conventional bedside crib

Kinderkraft NESTEE UP 2

A lower-cost bedside crib that still includes the mattress, fitted sheet, securing straps, five height settings and four lockable wheels.

Product weight7.5kg
Height settings5
Mattress81 × 46cm
IncludedMattress, sheet & straps

NESTEE UP 2 covers the main functions of a conventional bedside crib for substantially less than the premium products above it. It works in bedside and standalone modes, has five height settings and adjustable legs, and attaches to the adult bed using the supplied 4.56m securing straps.

Kinderkraft also includes the mattress and fitted sheet rather than leaving the basic sleep setup to be completed separately. The crib weighs 7.5kg and sits on four lockable wheels, which gives it a clear portability advantage within the home compared with the heavier furniture-style designs.

The included parts strengthen the value case

A low headline crib price can become less impressive once a model-specific mattress, sheet or attachment kit has to be added. NESTEE UP 2 arrives with the 81 × 46cm mattress, fitted sheet and fastening straps included, so the core bedside setup is covered in the standard package.

Spare bedding is still worth checking before purchase because the mattress does not use a conventional cot size. That is not unusual for bedside cribs, but it means replacement sheets need to fit securely rather than simply choosing whatever crib sheet is cheapest.

Adjustable legs and straps determine how it sits beside the bed

Kinderkraft combines five height levels with legs that can alter the crib’s width beside the adult bed. The securing straps run beneath the adult mattress, so the final fit depends on both the height of the mattress surface and the shape of the bed base below it.

Check those two measurements together rather than looking at height alone. A divan, projecting frame or storage bed can change how closely the crib’s legs are able to sit, and the supplied straps need to follow the route described in the instructions rather than being improvised around whatever part of the frame is easiest to reach.

At 7.5kg, it is easier to reposition than most of the premium options

The lighter steel frame and four wheels make NESTEE UP 2 easier to move around one floor of the home than the heavier Lua, SnuzPod5, Iora Pro or Next2Me Forever. That can help when pulling the crib away to make the adult bed or moving it into another room for a daytime nap.

Kinderkraft also provides a two-step mattress tilt, but that is not a reason to choose the crib for reflux. Current safer-sleep guidance says the sleep surface should remain flat, so the stronger arguments here are price, included equipment, low product weight and adjustable bedside fit.

Do not treat an incline setting as a safer-sleep feature.Several of these cribs include an adjustable incline and their manufacturers market it for reflux or congestion. The Lullaby Trust advises parents to keep the sleep surface flat and says tilting or propping the mattress does not help reflux. For routine sleep, use the crib flat unless an appropriate healthcare professional has given specific individual advice.
08 · How to choose

How to choose a bedside crib

The right crib needs to fit your adult bed safely before its storage, wheels or other extras enter the decision.

Measure to the top of the adult mattress

Measure from the floor to the upper surface of the mattress in the bed’s normal sleeping setup. Include any topper that remains in place. Compare that measurement with the crib manufacturer’s permitted range rather than measuring only the bed frame.

Look at the shape beneath the mattress

Divans, ottoman bases, low platform beds and frames with projecting rails can all affect how closely the crib can sit. Check whether the legs need to extend beneath the bed and whether there is enough clearance for them to do so.

Check how the crib attaches

Most bedside cribs use straps around or beneath the adult mattress, but not every design does. Lua is specifically designed without securing straps. Whichever system applies, follow the instructions for the exact crib rather than adapting the attachment method from another product.

Understand how the access side works

Current bedside cribs use different barrier and side-panel mechanisms. Some zip, some slide and some automatically return to the raised position. Practise operating the side once the crib is installed and use it only in the configurations permitted by the manual.

Check the mattress and replacement sheets

Bedside cribs frequently use model-specific mattress dimensions. The mattress should be firm, flat, waterproof and fit the sleep space correctly, while fitted sheets need to stay secure without bunching or leaving loose material around the baby.

Know what happens at the next stage

Most bedside cribs stop being suitable once the baby can sit, kneel, pull up or reaches the stated weight limit. Have the next cot ready before that point. Next2Me Forever is the exception here because the same frame is designed to continue into later cot stages.

Set the crib up against your actual bed before the baby arrives

Assemble the crib in the bedroom, set the final mattress height and complete whatever attachment procedure the manufacturer requires. Check the gap between the two sleep spaces, make sure the crib cannot move away from the bed and confirm that the side or barrier operates correctly in bedside mode.

Doing that before the first night also gives you time to discover less obvious problems, such as a bed frame blocking the crib legs or a deep mattress sitting outside the permitted height range. Those are compatibility issues that are much easier to resolve before the crib is needed.

A separate sleep space remains the point of a bedside crib

Positioning the crib beside the adult mattress is intended to keep the baby close while maintaining their own sleep surface. The mattress should remain firm and flat, the sleep area should stay clear and pillows, duvets, cot bumpers, sleep positioners and other soft items should not be added around the baby.

The Lullaby Trust recommends keeping the baby’s separate sleep space in the same room as a parent or carer for at least the first six months. A bedside crib is one way to arrange that, but the same underlying safer-sleep principles apply whichever cot or crib you choose.

09 · Our verdict

Make a decision based on the bed you own and what you want to happen during the day.

10 · Common questions

Frequently asked questions

The Lullaby Trust states that bedside cribs sold since 2020 should meet BS EN 1130:2019. Cot and crib mattresses have a separate standard, BS EN 16890:2017+A1:2021. A safety standard does not replace correct installation or safer-sleep guidance, so the crib still needs to be assembled and used exactly as instructed.

Yes, where the exact crib is designed for overnight sleep and is installed and used within its stated limits. Keep the baby’s sleep surface firm, flat and clear and follow the manufacturer’s bedside setup instructions.

No for routine sleep. The Lullaby Trust advises keeping babies flat on their backs and says not to incline, tilt or prop the mattress or cot for reflux. Some crib manufacturers provide incline settings, but independent safer-sleep advice should take priority when deciding how the baby sleeps.

It depends on the model. Many conventional bedside cribs are suitable only for roughly the first six months and must be stopped sooner if the baby can sit, kneel, pull themselves up or reaches a specified weight limit. Chicco Next2Me Forever is different because it is designed to continue into later cot stages.

No. Many use securing straps around or beneath the adult mattress, including the Maxi-Cosi and Kinderkraft options here. Mamas & Papas specifically designs Lua so it does not require straps. Always follow the attachment method for the exact product rather than assuming similar-looking cribs install in the same way.

Follow the instructions for the exact crib. Modern bedside cribs use different side and barrier systems, and BS EN 1130:2019 changed the requirements around fully drop-down sides. Do not alter, remove or leave a barrier in a configuration that the manufacturer does not permit.

No. A bedside crib places the baby’s own separate sleep surface immediately beside the adult bed. The Lullaby Trust recommends a clear, flat, firm, separate sleep space in the same room as a parent or carer for at least the first six months.

Not for the five cribs in this guide: each is supplied with its intended mattress. Check the exact bundle before ordering, particularly when buying through a retailer, and use only a mattress of the size and specification permitted by the manufacturer.

For most short-stage bedside cribs, the next step is a suitable cot or cot bed once the baby’s developmental or weight limit is reached. If you choose Next2Me Forever, the same product is designed to convert into a traditional cot and later a floor bed instead.

Before ordering Measure the adult mattress height and the available floor space beside the bed, then check the exact model’s attachment requirements and stop-use instructions. Mattress dimensions, sheets and bedside compatibility are product-specific.
